You are warmly invited to join a homegroup...
At St James, we believe that it is important for our members to get to know others in the church and build relationships so that they feel connected to the church family.
Home groups are one way in which we can support this. Our home groups are small groups of church members that meet regularly in homes in our Parish and across Bishop’s Stortford. They meet on different days and at different times during the week. Each group has its own identity, but they all encourage the building of relationships:
- with God, so that we can grow as disciples of Christ
- with other members of the group so that we can support each other in our daily lives
- with the local community around us so that we can meet their needs
Another option - become an Associate Member
If attending a homegroup weekly or fortnightly is too much of a commitment right now, or you’d just like to dip your toe in the water, then you are warmly invited to join a homegroup as an associate member. Associate members are invited to social events, barbecues and other events that their group plans. They can also ask for prayer from their group.
A warm welcome awaits you at our monthly Open Home group. The evenings start with coffee and chat, giving new church members & Home Groups the opportunity to mix and support one another. For some, who cannot commit to a weekly group, this is their chance for monthly fellowship, study and prayer. If you’re thinking of joining a group, why not come along on the first Thursday of the month? There’s no need to book in advance and we’d love to see you there!

This is a very friendly, open group. We share coffee and chat, keep a prayer diary and do some Bible Study. Currently we have 14 members, most of whom attend regularly each week. New members are very welcome.
Leaders: Allie Herd & Becky Miles
Tuesday 8.00pm (term times only)
We are a ‘travelling home group’ meeting at various homes in and around Thorley – ‘wherever there is room at the Inn’. If anyone wishes to join us please get in touch with us at church or with the homegroup co-ordinators.
Leaders: Lewis Wagner & Andrew Lawrence
Our group is focused on bible study and prayer. We usually agree on specific topics or studies, which we then cover in depth. We are there to support each other in all circumstances. There are a number of regulars, but also those who can only make it occasionally. Walks in the forest and social evenings with plenty of food and drink are also on the menu. All are welcome at our easy-going group.
Leaders: Tara Wright & Kirsty Pettinger
Our weekly meetings are an oasis from busy & sometimes tough lives, where we can share openly within an accepting & loving community. We take it in turns to lead using a variety of Bible based DVDs & study books. We pray regularly for each other & meet for a meal, film or walk from time to time.
Leaders: John & Kate Wiseman
Our very informal weekly group enjoys exploring the bible and growing in our faith together in different ways. We have many times of fun and fellowship together, which usually involve food.
Leader: Chris Conridge Deputy: Lin Holme
We are a mixed and enthusiastic group, meeting weekly to consider God’s word. New members are warmly welcomed and our evenings are filled with lively discussion, as we learn study, pray and laugh together. Our regular socials are great!
Leaders: John Wrentmore & Clive Hayball
We are a friendly group with a sense of humour. We welcome new members and encourage open discussion on matters of faith, ideal for anyone with questions, who wishes to explore Christianity, as well as for confirmed believers. We listen to and support each other and our meetings consist of sharing, bible study and prayer. We link up with another Home Group for occasional socials.
Leaders: Emma & Malcolm White
Our group has members from both St. James and St. Michael’s churches. We meet for prayer, fellowship, Bible study and lively discussion. Most of us have children and appreciate the support, friendship and prayers that the group offers, as we face the challenges that parenthood brings. Regular social events and family walks include family members who may not come to church or be part of a home group.
Leader: Di Griffith
Third Thursday of the month at 2.30pm
The ‘T-Cups’ is a group of the young at heart, who meet together once a month for fun and mutual support. We pray, chat and enjoy afternoon tea. Donations are collected for a charity of our choice. Other regular events include ‘Coffee Cups’ in a variety of restaurants in town; ‘Neighbours Together’ and trips to the local cinema and theatre.
For fuller details or to arrange transport, please contact Di.
